Over the past year, not only have retirement funds dropped in value, but to make matters worse, many people have tapped into their savings to shore up finances. Many employers have stopped making matching contributions. The result is a diminishing confidence in one’s ability to retire someday.

Worry about retirement is widespread. The National Institute on Retirement Security found that 83 percent of Americans are concerned about their ability to retire, according to a January 2009 survey.
